During the time when the Roman Empire ruled the earth, the Romans used silver for medical treatment. It continued to be used as a remedy during the Middle Ages in order to treat the wounded during a battle. Not too long ago people would place a silver coin in a pitcher of drinking water or milk in order to prevent spoilage. The early settlers used silver, and many people remember their grandparents placing silver dollars in milk in order to prolong its freshness at room temperature.
